Pinkard Construction/RNL design/build team awarded $28,000,000
Central Platte campus operations and maintenance facility contract

Project is pursuing Leadership in Environmental and Energy (LEED) Gold certification

Denver, CO - RNL and Pinkard Construction are proud to announce that its design/build team has been chosen to design and construct a $28,000,000 operations and maintenance facility for the City of Denver’s Public Works Department.

The RNL/Pinkard Construction team was selected following an intensive design-build competition in which teams designed to a set budget. The RNL/Pinkard team’s design emphasized durability, long term operating costs, efficient traffic and pedestrian circulation and multiple integrated strategies for sustainable design and operation.

The 105,000 square foot facility includes office and warehouse space, a fleet maintenance facility, enclosed storage for materials and vehicles, and a fuel/wash facility. Sustainable features include extensive photovoltaics, daylighting, solar orientation and water saving strategies.

“This is really a people facility,” said Dick Shiffer, principal at RNL. “The facility will house nearly 200 public works employees who will be relocating from their current facility at Decatur Street, as well as hundreds of vehicles and associated equipment. Due to the high visibility of the site adjacent to I-25 and the South Platte River, design aesthetics, especially along the river edge, were very important. The modified saw-tooth roof design was driven by our daylighting concept, which will allow natural daylight into all the occupied spaces, as well as provide south-facing sloped surfaces for photo-voltaic panels which will generate over 300kw of electricity for the campus. The entire campus is designed to be a safe and highly functional and efficient work environment, which will not only provide daily benefits to the department’s users, but will also reduce the department’s long-term operating costs,” Shiffer added.

Design is underway with construction scheduled to start in June, 2009. The project is scheduled for completion in November, 2010.
