Pinkard Construction Co. Completes New Student Recreation Center for Colorado School of Mines

Denver, CO - Pinkard Construction Company and Sink Combs Dethlefs Architects have just completed the new, $21.2 million Student Recreation Center for Colorado School of Mines.

The new student recreation center serves educational, recreational and athletic student programs on the School of Mines campus, and creates an important campus link to future on-campus housing and the recently completed Greek housing areas. Scope of work for the 110,000 gsf center included:

. Competition gymnasium

. Multiple fitness areas

. Indoor competition/recreation pool

. Offices

. Casual lounge spaces

. Extensive site development

A central upper-level concourse provides spectator access to the competition gymnasium and allows students to move through the building on their way to recreate or attend classes. The lower level entry is oriented to a primary campus intersection, emphasizing the building's prominence as a component of campus life.

The structure is structural steel and load bearing masonry. Exterior walls are masonry, metal panel and a variety of exterior glazing systems. Mechanical systems are roof top air handling units with direct and indirect evaporative cooling. For sustainable design/"green" components, particular attention was given to daylighting combined with dimming controllers, efficient steam heat and chilled water cooling systems, and an efficiency plan configuration that minimizes both heat gain and heat loss.
