The Molecular, Cellular, and Development Biology (MCDB) Department’s new, state-of-the-art research laboratory is an 11,500 sf, cast-in-place concrete addition to the Porter Biosciences Building. The addition houses the Transgenic Animal Facility, and includes: compressed air/gas access panels, vacuum lines, bumper rails, cage wash, autoclave equipment, deionized water, corner guard sinks and stainless steel lab tops.
A backup mechanical system provides temperature control to ±1°C in all 18 animal holding rooms. An emergency cooling system switchover is tied to the existing building system. Supply and exhaust fans were installed through existing roof monitors in the penthouse to provide 227,200 cfm of air flow. Systems monitoring is tied directly to the University’s building maintenance monitoring system.
