LAKEWOOD, COLO. - Pinkard Construction has been awarded an Excellence in Construction award for City of Aurora's Moorhead Recreation Center. The award, given to projects that excel in safety, quality, and innovation, was presented at an event hosted by Associated Builders and Contractors Rocky Mountain Chapter on October 20.
The project, designed by Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture (BRS), features a highly customized design that has been described as "bespoke." Some components were so unique that finding subcontractors who could implement them was challenging. Additionally, because Pinkard’s bid came in significantly under the City’s budget, a second phase of work was added just days after award of the first phase, which complicated and compressed the construction schedule.
Pinkard collaborated with The City and BRS to deliver the project on time, and provide quality implementation of the intricate and beautiful design. Said City of Aurora Project Manager Kendall Koca, "This team worked as fast and furiously as they could to construct BRS' wonderful design: the windows with the translucent panels serve as beacons to draw people in; and the beautiful matrix-like green glazed brick, and the mosaic one-inch tiles. Pinkard had mock-ups upon mock-ups. Amazing job."
The scope included renovating the existing pool, the addition of a new 26,000 sf recreation center and a 12,000 sf natatorium with a lap pool and leisure pool, a full-sized gymnasium with three cross courts and running track, new fitness and cardio space, community teaching kitchen, multi-purpose rooms, public computer space, additional parking and landscape upgrades. The pool renovation included pool-shape reconfiguration, addition of a 55-foot water slide, and deck replacement. The finished center is approximately 40,000 square feet.
The finished product plays an important part in the local community.
Tom Barrett, Director of Parks, Recreation and Open Space: “The Center is a first for the city in 40 years. This project is an important asset to the community that was creatively conceived and will be cherished for many years to come. “
City of Aurora Manager of Recreation Byron Fanning: "To a lot of people, it's not just a building, not just a rec center, it’s more like their second home. We have kids that come here and hang out all day after school – and during the summer – all day. It could be a situation where both parents work, and they need a place to belong. This center gives them that place to belong. They come in and just are so moved by what this facility provides.”
